FAQ

A permanent residency (PR) is your legal right to reside in Canada permanently. There are various categories, including Business, Skilled, and Family Immigration, to be eligible for the PR. PR is issued for 5 years, and is available for renewal upon satisfying eligibility.  

If you wish to become a Canadian Citizen, you must be a permanent resident, filed your taxes for at least three years, satisfy residency requirement (at least 1,095 days physically present in Canada) with eligible status. 

In order for a foreign national to work in Canada, you are required to have a Work Permit, unless exempt. There are two types of work permits: 

  • Open Work Permit : No restriction on location or employer.
  • Employer-specific work permit (closed work permit): Only available to work for the specified employer.

Any students wanting to study 6 months or longer requires a study permit unless exempt. In order to apply for a study permit, you need to: 

  • Enroll at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • have a valid visa to enter
  • Valid letter of acceptance from a school
  • Proof of funds to support yourself in Canada 
  • Any other letters of reference
  • Proof of leaving Canada at the end of your stay

No, Canada recognize “Dual Intent”, which means you have more than one intention when applying for a visa. For example, you may be applying for a study permit with future intention to acquire PR in Canada. It is okay. But you are still required to prove that you will leave Canada before your valid legal status expires.

As a Canadian permanent resident, you are entitled to:

  • live, work and/or study in any Canadian province or territory with no restriction
  • social benefits, including Canadian health care system
  • apply for a Canadian citizenship upon satisfying other eligibility as well
